What is the IP67 Rating?

The IP code is composed of two numerals:

The first numeral refers to the protection against solid objects and is rated on a scale from 0 (no protection) to 6 (no ingress of dust).

The second numeral rates the enclosure’s protection against liquids and uses a scale from 0 (no protection) to 9 (high-pressure hot water from different angles).

The first edition of IEC 60529 was published in 1976 with the aim of creating a single document to bring together all requirements regarding protection by enclosures. Previously, separate standards had been developed for motors and low-voltage switchgear and controlgear.

What is IP67? What does it mean?

The IP67 Rating represents one of the highest levels of protection provided by electrical enclosures or housings against water and dust. An IP67-rated device is 100% protected against solid objects like dust and sand while also being tested to work for at least 30 minutes while under 1 m of water.

If a product has an IP67 rating, that indicates it is "waterproof." The 6 indicates "complete protection against dust over extended time" as well as "protection against contact with objects greater than 1mm in diameter, such as a wire or a small tool."The 7 indicates the system is "protected against short periods of immersion in water while under pressure between 15cm and 1m." IP67 products offer a greater degree of protection than those with IP65 or IP66 ratings, both of which are merely "water-resistant." "Water-resistant" means that the system protects against water entrance to a degree, but it does not offer complete protection.
